Hordeum vulgare (barley) belongs to the grasses (Poaceae) and is considered as one of the first domesticated cereal variety originating from the Middle East over 10,000 years ago.
Today, it is still one of the most important cereals in the world, ranking fourth after corn, rice and wheat in the amount of grain produced.
Most of the crop is used as animal feed, but it is also consumed by humans as health foods or in the form of beer, malt coffee or destilled beverages.
